Thank God i live in a town that doesn't recycle. Luckily, we can barely keep our water treatment plant running, so recycling is a distant goal of the community. I can see collecting cans and getting money back, but doing it to save the environment doesn't help.

In fact, I think that we should put all non-hazardous waste in landfills. If in, say 200 years we have no oil left, we can harvest these landfills and get resources from them.
